Asbestos Exposure in the Army and Mesothelioma
For example, open-wheel mechanics in the Army worked on general-purpose vehicles like Jeeps that required the replacement of brakes, clutches, and engine gaskets on a regular maintenance schedule. The gasket and friction materials used in these repairs contained Asbestos. Even the most careful open-wheel mechanic would have breathed the dust involved in manipulating the replacement parts.
Similarly, all tracked vehicles used by the Army also have braking and clutch mechanisms which contained Asbestos. The manufacturer required a maintenance schedule and specified that all friction and gasket material be replaced at a certain number of usage hours. This work by Army mechanics and trained crew members led to regular exposures to Asbestos dust.Finally, Army bases worldwide constructed from the 1940s-1980s were built with Asbestos containing materials.

Coast Guardsmen (and women) carry out their mission in both domestic and international waters. Service in the Coastguard causes exposure to Asbestos through ship operation and maintenance. Asbestos is on Coast Guard Ships, Bases, and Shipyards. All ships commissioned by the Coastguard before the 1980s contained Asbestos. Inhaling the fibers of Asbestos can cause Lung Cancer or Mesothelioma much later in life.
US Coastguard Cutters (Hamilton Class and Reliance Class) range from 220 to 378 feet in length. These Cutters have boilers, pumps, ice melters, and thousands of steam-pipe feet that require maintenance and repairs. The insulation, gasket, and packing materials for the repairs were asbestos products until the 1980s. Maintenance of Coastguard ships and facilities resulted in service members breathing asbestos-containing dust.

We Don't Sue the Military or the Government
We Do Not Sue the military or the government. Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related cancers in veterans are the responsibility of the asbestos manufacturers, distributors, and suppliers. These companies profited from the military even after they knew of the dangers of Asbestos.
It is not unpatriotic to fight back against companies that exposed you to Asbestos. Veterans diagnosed with Mesothelioma have the right to sue the companies for profiting from asbestos-containing products to our Armed Forces.
